The Goof is probably best known as that grinning head sitting high atop of the Bali Hai in San Diego. But Tiki enthusiasts know, he was around long before the Bali Hai came into existence. The story of The Goof actually begins with Christian’s Hut. After the success of the original Christian’s Hut on Catalina in the 1930’s, several other “Huts” were built including the Newport Balboa location which featured our favorite goofy head. In 1953 Christian’s Hut built the Shelter Island location and moved the Goof down from Newport Beach to San Diego. This location later became the Bali Hai and the Goof lives on. But who is he? Sorry folks, other than his name is Ramu, meaning of “the Goof” still remains a mystery. So until we find out, get this amazing tribute to a true Tiki icon. If you want to learn more about The Goof, you’ll have to wait for our next blog post.
