The Oceanics Shield Pin is our first tribute to Oceanic Arts (OA). Oceanic Arts was started in 1956 by Robert(Bob) Van Oosting and LeRoy Schmaltz. They created & supplied decor for so many classic Tiki establishments, that it’s hard imagine what Polynesian pop culture would be without Bob & Leroy’s influence. This pin features our version of a New Guinea Shield carved by Leroy. In the OA catalog it was number #402, but was often referred to as the “Boy/Girl Shield”. It could be found everywhere, from the Mai Kai to the Kahiki, even in Disneyland and Trader Sam’s. It is also said to be the inspiration for the Maui character logo for Disney’s Polynesian Resort. We were lucky enough to present Bob with the first Oceanic Shield Pin on a recent visit to OA.
This version of the Oceanic Shield Pin is styled after one the at the entrance to Adventureland in Disneyland. Each pin comes mounted on a backing card and features two black rubber style clutches for extra safety.
Size: 1.75 inches tall (44mm) Limited edition: of 400.
